2013 Special Issue
JIR is developing an upcoming special issue on the 21st Century Intergenerational Workforce to be published in September 2013. The 21st century workforce is characterized by an unprecedented mix of four, and sometimes, five generations working side by side in the workplace. This dynamic can be attributed to labor shortages in some industries and the rising average age of retirement among workers. The need among older adults to remain employed, part-time or full-time, can be motivated by financial need and/or a desire to remain engaged and active. By 2014, nearly one-third of the total U.S. workforce (32%) will be age 50 or older. At the same time, the fastest growing age cohort, those born between 1980-2000, comprise 25% of the U.S. workforce. In traditionally hierarchical organizations, employees in these age cohorts would be separated by positions of rank and status. Today, it is more likely that they will be working in a diversity of settings that require day to day interaction.

From the Field Section Expansion
From Volume 8 onward, the Journal of Intergenerational Relationships has widened the scope of its From the Field section. Apart from the traditional Program Profiles, Adult and Children's Book Reviews, Media Reviews, and Forum papers, Reflections from the Field, critical reflections on specific topics not necessarily relating to a program, and New Programs in the Field, concept papers about new program ideas or programs under development, are welcome.
With these two new subsections we encourage more contributions from practitioners in the intergenerational field.
